We teamed up with Florida Supreme Court Historical Society for a feature of Justice Macrae in Florida Supreme Court Historical Review Magazine. No one actually knows what Justice Macrae looked like, but we had the opportunity to capture a portrait that represents him. It was our first time in the Florida Supreme Court and we were thrilled to be a part.

I (Alex) had the opportunity to spend the morning with Dr. Kevin Drygas and his family. As a father and business owner, being present with my kids is one of the most important things in the world to me. It was amazing getting to be a “fly on the wall” as Dr. Drygas put the scrubs away and exchanged it for a skateboard. He shared about their journey to Tallahassee and building a business here. He and his practice makes Tallahassee a better place for all the pet owners in out community. We were grateful for Tallahassee Magazine sharing these images!

Tallahassee Magazine assigned us to photograph a feature on Ology Brewing Company for their May/June 2021 issue. The story, written by Bob Ferrante, covered Ology's expansion from craft beer and coffee into distilled spirits, and the assignment took us to their facility off Powermill Court in Tallahassee to capture photographs of the team, the distilling process, and the products themselves.
Brewery and distillery photography is one of those assignments where you're balancing people, products, and space all in the same session. Ology's facility has a lot of visual interest; there's stainless steel equipment, bottles on shelves, the distilling setup, and the taproom and beer garden that regulars already know well. The challenge is making all of those elements feel cohesive in a magazine spread rather than like a disconnected collection of detail images. You need portraits of the people behind the product, close-ups of the bottles and the process, and wider compositions that give the reader a sense of the space.
For the product photography, we used Profoto lighting to give us control over how the bottles and glassware looked. Photographing glass and liquid is tricky because you're dealing with reflections, transparency, and the way light passes through different colors of spirit. A bottle of clear vodka behaves completely differently under lights than a bottle of rum, and getting both to look good in the same visual language takes some attention to how you position and modify the light. We also photographed portraits of lead distiller Jason Grant and members of the Ology team in and around the production space, using the equipment and environment as the backdrop rather than pulling them out of context.
As Tallahassee photographers, we've watched the local craft beverage scene grow over the last several years, and Ology has been a big part of that. We've photographed their space for other assignments as well, including the 10 Places to Chill feature we did for INFLUENCE Magazine. Having that familiarity with the location and the team helps when you're working on a tight editorial timeline because you already know the layout, the light, and the spots that photograph well.
This kind of editorial photography sits at the intersection of food and beverage, portrait, and commercial work. It's one of the areas where photography in Tallahassee has a lot of room to grow, and features like this in Tallahassee Magazine help put the local scene on the map for readers across the region.

Every 2 years, we welcome a new group people to Tallahassee. Between the House and the Senate, there are elections and a new class of legislators come in. The 2021 session was unique because of Covid, but we were grateful for the opportunity to photograph the “freshman” legislators and share some of our favorite local spots and facts about TLH. One of our largest editorial projects to date was traveling around the state of of Florida, capturing portraits of almost all of the 100 Most Influential People in Florida Politics. It was incredible to meet people from all over the state that come to Tallahassee every year for Legislative Session, and learn about what they do and the impacts they make on our daily lives. It also brought perspective to how influential our community is around the state. Thanks to Peter Schorsch for trusting us with this project for INFLUENCE Magazine.

Goals matter. The first of year brings out thoughts of personal and professional goals. One of my goals was to capture an image for the cover of a magazine. I didn’t have a particular subject or publication in mind, but I wanted something that would challenge me to think of “the shot” instead of the entire photoshoot. I had the opportunity to take portraits of US District Attorney Keefe and I was so excited when it became the cover of an issue of 850 Business Magazine.

Tallahassee Magazine assigned us to photograph their First Family feature for the May/June 2019 issue, and it remains one of the most memorable editorial assignments we've done. The assignment was to capture photos of Gov. Ron DeSantis and first lady Casey DeSantis with their two young children at the Governor's Mansion for a story written by Pete Reinwald. As Tallahassee photographers, we've worked in a lot of historic spaces around the capital city, but the Governor's Mansion presented a unique combination of challenges: priceless interiors, tight security coordination, and two toddlers who had their own plans for the afternoon.
The Governor's Mansion is a photographer's dream and a photographer's puzzle at the same time. The rooms are full of rich wood, historic artifacts, and carefully curated details that previous families have added over the decades. But those same elements create tricky lighting situations. We brought Profoto lighting to give us control in the interior spaces while keeping the look natural and warm. The goal was to make the images feel relaxed and lived-in, not stiff or overly produced. When you're photographing a family with a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old, there's no such thing as a perfectly controlled frame, and that's actually what makes the pictures work.
Some of our favorite moments from the session happened on the patio, where the family gathered after the interview. The kids were exploring, grabbing oranges, doing what kids do. That's where the real personality came through. We kept our Canon lenses long enough to give the family some breathing room while staying close enough to catch the candid interactions. Editorial photography like this lives in the in-between moments; not the posed portrait, but the glance, the laugh, the toddler reaching for something she shouldn't.
Photographing inside a working governor's residence means coordinating with security teams, working within specific time windows, and being respectful of the space. As editorial photographers in Florida, we've developed a workflow for high-profile sessions in sensitive locations. You come prepared, you work efficiently, and you stay flexible when a toddler decides the session is over before you do.

On May 2nd, 2019, I spend a little more than half a day with Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey. We meet at the Tallahassee Police Department Headquarters, for a memorial service. Then, I rode with him to the Tallahassee School of Math and Science where he read a few books and had a Fortnite Dance Competition with a class of kindergarteners. We drove the city, talking about growth, development and preservation of the history in our community. Next stop was the Leadership Tallahassee Class 36 graduation and finally to the Bond neighborhood. And that was all before 1:15pm… We partnered with Rowland Publishing to share the story of Tallahassee’s new mayor in Tallahassee Magazine.

THOM Magazine assigned us to photograph a feature on Domi Station for their Fall/Winter 2017 issue. The story, written by Rob Rushin, profiled the business incubator and its leadership team, and the assignment brought us to the Domi Station space in Tallahassee to capture portraits of Executive Director Lucas Lindsey, Director of Community Sabrina Torres, and Director of Programs Dominick Ard, along with images of the co-working environment itself.
Domi Station operates out of a trackside brick building, and spaces like that are interesting to work in as Tallahassee photographers because the architecture gives you a lot to play with. Exposed brick, open floor plans, and the kind of natural light that comes through industrial windows all create a setting that feels energetic without needing much art direction. The challenge is making a workspace feel dynamic in a photograph when the actual work happening there is people at laptops and whiteboards. You have to find the angles and the moments that communicate the energy of the place without staging something that doesn't feel real.
For the portraits of the leadership team, we wanted the images to feel connected to the space rather than pulled out of it. Environmental portraits work best when the subject and the setting are telling the same story, and Domi's whole identity is built around the community they've created inside that building. We worked with our Canon mirrorless system and used Profoto lighting to give us control over the mix of natural and artificial light that a space like that typically presents. Co-working environments can be unpredictable with overhead fluorescents competing against window light, so having portable lighting that we could shape quickly made a big difference.
This was also one of our earlier editorial assignments for a publication outside of the Tallahassee and Florida politics orbit. THOM Magazine is based in Thomasville, Georgia, and the feature was part of a broader look at the entrepreneurial ecosystem developing across the Big Bend region and into South Georgia. As editorial photographers in Florida, we love assignments that go beyond the expected and show a different dimension of what's happening in this part of the state. Domi Station represents a side of Tallahassee that doesn't always get the spotlight, and it was a great subject for that kind of storytelling through photography.

Often times, our love for the masses hampers our love for the individual. This was the thought that kept going through my (Alex) mind as I keep meeting people in our community who fled for their lives and now call Tallahassee home. At the same time, refugees seem to be a political pawn for both parties, but these are real people who are now our neighbors and we wanted to showcase that. In the spring of 2017, a project called Refugees of TLH was born. We were honored that Professional Photographers of America wanted to share the story of the project in Professional Photographer Magazine.
