No one actually knows what Justice Macrae looked like, but we had the opportunity to capture a portrait that represents him. It was our first time in the Florida Supreme Court and we were thrilled to be a part.

I (Alex) had the opportunity to spend the morning with Dr. Kevin Drygas and his family. As a father and business owner, being present with my kids is one of the most important things in the world to me. It was amazing getting to be a “fly on the wall” as Dr. Drygas put the scrubs away and exchanged it for a skateboard. He shared about their journey to Tallahassee and building a business here. He and his practice makes Tallahassee a better place for all the pet owners in out community. We were grateful for Tallahassee Magazine sharing these images!

Every 2 years, we welcome a new group people to Tallahassee. Between the House and the Senate, there are elections and a new class of legislators come in. The 2021 session was unique because of Covid, but we were grateful for the opportunity to photograph the “freshman” legislators and share some of our favorite local spots and facts about TLH. One of our largest editorial projects to date was traveling around the state of of Florida, capturing portraits of almost all of the 100 Most Influential People in Florida Politics. It was incredible to meet people from all over the state that come to Tallahassee every year for Legislative Session, and learn about what they do and the impacts they make on our daily lives. It also brought perspective to how influential our community is around the state. Thanks to Peter Schorsch for trusting us with this project for INFLUENCE Magazine.

Goals matter. The first of year brings out thoughts of personal and professional goals. One of my goals was to capture an image for the cover of a magazine. I didn’t have a particular subject or publication in mind, but I wanted something that would challenge me to think of “the shot” instead of the entire photoshoot. I had the opportunity to take portraits of US District Attorney Keefe and I was so excited when it became the cover of an issue of 850 Business Magazine.

Tallahassee Magazine assigned us to photograph their First Family feature for the May/June 2019 issue, and it remains one of the most memorable editorial assignments we've done. The assignment was to capture photos of Gov. Ron DeSantis and first lady Casey DeSantis with their two young children at the Governor's Mansion for a story written by Pete Reinwald. As Tallahassee photographers, we've worked in a lot of historic spaces around the capital city, but the Governor's Mansion presented a unique combination of challenges: priceless interiors, tight security coordination, and two toddlers who had their own plans for the afternoon.
The Governor's Mansion is a photographer's dream and a photographer's puzzle at the same time. The rooms are full of rich wood, historic artifacts, and carefully curated details that previous families have added over the decades. But those same elements create tricky lighting situations. We brought Profoto lighting to give us control in the interior spaces while keeping the look natural and warm. The goal was to make the images feel relaxed and lived-in, not stiff or overly produced. When you're photographing a family with a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old, there's no such thing as a perfectly controlled frame, and that's actually what makes the pictures work.
Some of our favorite moments from the session happened on the patio, where the family gathered after the interview. The kids were exploring, grabbing oranges, doing what kids do. That's where the real personality came through. We kept our Canon lenses long enough to give the family some breathing room while staying close enough to catch the candid interactions. Editorial photography like this lives in the in-between moments; not the posed portrait, but the glance, the laugh, the toddler reaching for something she shouldn't.
Photographing inside a working governor's residence means coordinating with security teams, working within specific time windows, and being respectful of the space. As editorial photographers in Florida, we've developed a workflow for high-profile sessions in sensitive locations. You come prepared, you work efficiently, and you stay flexible when a toddler decides the session is over before you do.

On May 2nd, 2019, I spend a little more than half a day with Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey. We meet at the Tallahassee Police Department Headquarters, for a memorial service. Then, I rode with him to the Tallahassee School of Math and Science where he read a few books and had a Fortnite Dance Competition with a class of kindergarteners. We drove the city, talking about growth, development and preservation of the history in our community. Next stop was the Leadership Tallahassee Class 36 graduation and finally to the Bond neighborhood. And that was all before 1:15pm… We partnered with Rowland Publishing to share the story of Tallahassee’s new mayor in Tallahassee Magazine.

Domi Station was one of the places where we first found community when we moved to Tallahassee. Executive Director Lucas Lindsey, Community Manager Sabrina Torres and Director of Incubator Programs Dominick Ard’is have become like family to us. When we got asked to capture people that mean so much to us in a place that means so much to us, we didn’t hesitate. We were honored to partner with Thomasville Center for the Arts to share the story of Domi Station in THOM Magazine.

Often times, our love for the masses hampers our love for the individual. This was the thought that kept going through my (Alex) mind as I keep meeting people in our community who fled for their lives and now call Tallahassee home. At the same time, refugees seem to be a political pawn for both parties, but these are real people who are now our neighbors and we wanted to showcase that. In the spring of 2017, a project called Refugees of TLH was born. We were honored that Professional Photographers of America wanted to share the story of the project in Professional Photographer Magazine.
